Well, my NaBloPoMo efforts lasted a whole two days! But, on the up side, I did post two days in a row, which is something of a novelty for this blog. I’ll excuse myself by saying I’m going for quality not quantity – yes, I know, I should make more of an effort to provide you with that.

Not sure if today’s post will provide quality, but it does highlight a couple of cases of the gleefully offended – oh come on, some people just love to be, their day isn’t complete if they haven’t been outraged at least once.

Case Number One

Cast your minds back a couple of weeks to the day Tweeters nobbled a particularly nasty poll on the Daily Mail website. The Heil have hit back with an article detailing just how horrible gypsies really are, and it must be true because it’s written by a man who met one. I met a Daily Mail reader once, he was an inarticulate prat who smelt a bit funny …

The main theme of his piece is that travellers ignore planning regulations when setting up camps, and this is a Bad Thing. Oddly, according to the same publication, it’s not a Bad Thing when middle class people flout the same regulations in order to build large houses in previously unspoilt countryside. In those circumstance it’s perfectly acceptable, and if anyone objects, terms such as bureaucracy gone mad and little Hitlers in town halls are used. It’s funny, I always thought rich, pompous, middle class men were subject to the same laws as the rest of us (including gypsies), obviously I was wrong.

Case Number Two

As most of you will know, the British comedy actress, Mollie Sugden died this week. You wouldn’t think this could be the most controversial of topics, but somehow, that is exactly what it became. As a tribute to the fondly remembered personality, Jonathon Ross suggested tweeting the hashtag #MrsSlocombesPussy – a reference to her cat owning character in the television series, Are You Being Served.

By mid-morning, the topic was one of the most popular on Twitter, except amongst certain tech bloggers who decided it was porn and wrote scathingly about the problem of spam on Twitter. Jack and Rhys discuss the resulting furore extremely eloquently, so I won’t go over it again. However, it does highlight the need for research amongst all bloggers! And seriously, tech blogging guys, how likely was it that almost the whole of the UK twittersphere (and that of other English speaking countries) had overnight morphed into porn-peddling spammers?! Remember, Google is your friend, use it wisely and whenever in doubt.

BTW The title was my second choice, I was going to go for something like ‘Gypsies Camp on Mrs Slocombe’s Pussy’, but thought it was a bit naff. However, if you can do better leave an offering in the comments!
