World Cup, Bears and the Philosophical Simpsons
Hello Dear Reader. You may notice my World Cup countdown thingy at the top right* of the page. It’s not long now, and I can’t wait. I love the whole event, every naff, cheesy moment. The agony of watching penalty shootouts, and the thrill of seeing that one little team who manage to give the big boys a run for their money . . . remember Croatia coming third in 98? I know a lot of people reading this will have no interest in football at all, which I can understand, but the World Cup is different. It has all the passion and drama of opera, the tragedy and comedy of a soap. It has goodies and baddies. It can make your heart sing, then cruelly break it. And of course, here in Eng(er)land there is always the hope that this time, just maybe, football will be coming home. Go on, support your team and enjoy the party feeling that descends on the country for a week or so. All together now – “Three lions on a shirt, Jules Rimet still gleaming . . .”
In the news:
The Simpsons is more than a cartoon, it’s philosophy. I can see what the writer means, initially you do think it’s all about Bart saying ‘eat my shorts’ but when you watch it, you discover that in many ways, this cartoon is more like real life than many soap operas.
A bear has been seen in Germany for the first time in 171 years. I noticed the article mentioned that it has destroyed a bee hive on route. You know what that means . . . it must be Winnie the Pooh! Then there is the other bear story which is horrible. (Don’t look at that if you are easily upset.) Really, whoever thought it was a good idea to keep bears with small furry creatures should be forced to move in with them themselves.
Other Stuff:
If you have your own domain name, have you ever wondered just how much it is worth? Now, you can find out for free. Apparently, mine could be worth over $9000, I’m not getting excited ’cause it is only in theory.
* Thank you to Admiral Pooper for pointing out the thingy was on the right, not the left as I originally stated.
I appreciate you dropping by,

I hate to be unobservant, but I didn’t notice the World Cup thingy in the upper left; I did, however, notice it in the upper right. Could it possibly be the same one?
And I thought St. Patrick drove all the bears out of Germany. Goes to show you what I know.

I’m not at all a football fan, but I do like to watch the world cup, you are right, it has all the highs, lows and drama. I’ll be cheering them on.

Oops, yes, that’s the one. Sorry, having a blonde moment there.
LOL @ And I thought St. Patrick drove all the bears out of Germany.
Maybe he did, he got about a bit.

Jude – it does make for compulsive viewing. People who avoid it really don’t know what they are missing.
Do you think we could get the Admiral interested?

I like a woman who admits her mistakes. If I had pointed out the same error to my wife she would have said, “I did that on purpose, just to keep you on your toes.” She says a similar thing about her inability to make a proper gravy: “I did it on purpose, just to keep you in the bathroom.”
Ladies, I do indeed watch World Cup matches, but not with the same fervor you do.
Thank you for the humorous comments this morning, Kate.

Well, if it had been Mr Blogs who had noticed I would probably have said the same as your wife
Good luck to the USA in the World Cup! They are a great team to watch, they play very much like a British side.

Ally – talking of the flags on cars, I have seen people with them for over a month now. A touch premature IMO.

Pete, I love watching the little teams too, although I do like to see ‘local’ sides do well. Still, it’s always nice when an outsider comes along and plays one of the favourites off the pitch.
Remember France last time – losing to Senegal in the first round?
